3 Ways An IEP Can Work Harmoniously In An Inclusive Classroom

IEPs can be thought of by some as a hurdle to get over in being able to deliver quality instruction to the student and their peers in an inclusive classroom. For sure, some IEPs have lots and lots of accommodations that need to be met on a daily basis. When you have more than one child with an IEP in an inclusive classroom, as is often the case, trying to deliver instruction seamlessly to every student can feel like a chore.


Today’s teacher is expected to do more for their students than ever before. School districts are feeling the pinch of sparse resources, especially in the way of special education. How is a teacher supposed to handle it all and do it well, day in and day out? How can more be done to set up the teacher in an inclusive classroom for success?


Support Of An Inclusive Classroom Begins At The Top  

Getting everyone excited about managing an inclusive classroom begins with the enthusiastic support of the school administration. Making this endeavor a “We’re 100% behind you,” kind of a thing makes the challenge a whole lot easier than the “It’s your job so do it,” approach.


It is incumbent on the good administrator to listen to teachers when they struggle to manage this kind of classroom and offer suggestions that might help to ease the burden. Be careful to to take in what is being said. Are there other teachers in an inclusive classroom with the same concerns? Take the time to get them into the same room, raise the issue and see how they can commonly work together to come up with the right solution. Just like an inclusive classroom lesson would be managed.


Likewise, when a teacher shares a success that happens in their inclusive classroom, pass it on to the other teachers. Good news should be shared, and it certainly boosts morale to have the school administrator praising on one of their own to the others. Be liberal and public with kudos.

Failing To Plan Your Inclusive Lesson Plan Is Planning To Fail


If there is anything anyone will tell you about how to establish success in an inclusive classroom, it is planning, planning, and planning again. Part of that planning process is reviewing the IEPs for the students in your classroom prior to your lesson and activity planning. Make sure you include any accommodations and see that what you want to do will jive with your plans in a way that not only includes accommodations but will also be a positive experience for the students as well.


Anything gets stressful when it isn’t planned well and things go awry. Making you sure account for not only accommodations but what else you can do if something fails will keep you on an even keel in front of your students and the lesson moving forward despite unforseen hiccups.


Just like keeping track of what works, make note of what didn’t work for a particular student and why. This will help with IEP facilitation in general, but will also help special education specialists make suggestions of how it could work or what else might need to be worked into the student’s IEP as a skill gap that needs filling.
